Parliament has passed the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment No. 2) Bill, 2025, removing the marine gas oil subsidy and raising the levy.
The new law increases the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy by 193 pesewas per litre on marine gas oil.
Government says the move tackles abuse and smuggling that have affected the credibility of the subsidy programme for marine gas oil.
Officials expect the revised levy to generate GH¢71 million, helping reduce energy sector debts and fund outstanding shortfall payments.
Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Nyarko Ampem explained the subsidy cut does not impact premix fuel supplied to artisanal fishers
