‎Gov’t spends GHS8.94 billion on flagship programmes in 2024


The Government of Ghana spent a total of GHS8.94 billion on its flagship programmes in 2024.

‎According to the latest Auditor-General’s report on the Whole-of-Government Accounts.

The Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme received the largest share.

‎With GHS 3.6 billion allocated to support secondary education and skills development.

The School Feeding Programme followed with GHS 1.13 billion, aimed at providing daily meals to pupils in public basic schools across the country.

‎In the agriculture sector, the Fertiliser Subsidy initiative under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme was allocated GHS 917.5 million to boost food production.

The Food Farmer Recovery Relief Programme also received GH¢618 million.

‎Other notable allocations included GHS628.9 million for the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme

GHS 533.5 million for nursing training allowances, and GHS 438 million for the Youth Employment Agency.

‎Subsidies for the 2018 BECE and WASSCE examinations cost GHS196.2 million, while teacher training allowances and feeding support amounted to GH¢113.4 million.

‎Scholarships and capitation grants for second-cycle schools received GHS 102.4 million and the National Identification Programme was allocated GHS288.6 million.

Arabic instructors under education support services received GHS 33.2 million.

‎Despite these significant investments in education, agriculture, and social protection, some analysts have raised concerns over the efficiency and accountability of the funds spent.

Calling for better monitoring and impact assessment mechanisms.
