Mahama orders probe into assault on JoyNews journalist

‎President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the assault on JoyNews reporter, Carlos Carlony and his cameraman.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 30, during a demolition exercise at a property reportedly owned by businessman McDan.

‎President Mahama addressed the matter on Thursday, July 31, at the swearing-in of deputy ministers at Jubilee House.

‎He said he has directed the security services to investigate the assault and punish the officers involved.

‎“Such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the President stated during his address.

‎He reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom, describing himself as a “card-carrying member” of the Ghana Journalists Association.

“I will not preside over a government that abuses or intimidates journalists,” he declared.

‎President Mahama emphasised the media’s vital role in democracy and the need to protect press freedom at all costs.

‎He announced plans to meet with security leaders and GJA to promote mutual respect between media and officers.

‎The goal, he explained, is to design an orientation programme that treats the media as partners, not enemies.

‎Carlos Carlony was assaulted while interviewing an eyewitness during coverage of the demolition exercise at McDan’s warehouse.

Military and national security personnel reportedly stopped him from filming, detained him and forced him to kneel.

Carlony alleges one officer punched him from behind; he has since received medical treatment and undergone diagnostic scans.

Three other people, including the McDan Group CEO were also allegedly detained during the operation.
