Demolition resumes at Sakumono ramsar site today

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) will resume demolishing unauthorised structures on protected Ramsar sites in Sakumono, Klagon, and Tema on July 22, 2025.

‎This new phase of the operation follows recent flooding in the Tema West Municipality, which caused widespread damage to homes and properties.

‎Authorities have blamed part of the flooding on the encroachment of wetlands, especially at the Sakumono Ramsar site, where buildings were constructed on watercourses.

‎REGSEC, in collaboration with National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has already removed several illegal structures in the area.

‎These demolished buildings were located within wetland zones that are meant to act as natural flood control systems.

‎The demolition exercise aims to prevent future disasters and restore the environmental integrity of the Ramsar sites.

‎Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo is expected to lead a team of security officials to continue the operation this morning.
